By Lamp Light

A woman sews under the lamp — not a night scene, not a symbol: light itself as the subject, painted in Norway fifteen years before Hammershøi's famous Copenhagen interiors. Backer studied in Munich and Paris, exhibited at the 1889 World's Fair; then the North closed around her, and the histories kept only the Dane.

Part of the 'Erased Masterpieces' curatorial series celebrating women artists restored to art history.
