Rachel Ruysch in Her Studio

The portraitist Michiel van Musscher painted the woman at her easel; but the flowers, the butterflies and the palette on the canvas are by her own hand — Ruysch signed her image with what was hers. Europe's most famous flower painter, mother of ten children, painting into her eighties, absent from the surveys for two centuries.
