Judith Beheading Holofernes

Judith does not flinch, and her maidservant does not wait outside the tent: she pins Holofernes down while the blade passes. Two women doing together what a century of male painters had turned into a scene of hesitation. Signed by the artist — then inventoried under Caravaggio's shadow for nearly a hundred years.

Part of the 'Erased Masterpieces' curatorial series celebrating women artists restored to art history.
