The Horse Fair

Five metres of muscle and dust: the horses of the Paris horse market, painted by a woman who held a police cross-dressing permit to study them in trousers. Shown from Paris to London to New York, it made her the most famous woman painter alive — yet the first woman made Officer of the Légion d'honneur sits outside most histories of the century.

Part of the 'Erased Masterpieces' curatorial series celebrating women artists restored to art history.
