A young woman draws; through the broken window behind her another couple sketches in the dusk. Exhibited at the Salon of 1801, the canvas was then sold as a David — the highest compliment and the deepest erasure: a woman painting a woman painter, filed under the most famous man of the era. Villers was twenty-seven.
Part of the 'Erased Masterpieces' curatorial series celebrating women artists restored to art history.
