Young Woman Knitting

The knitter does not pose: the gesture is caught mid-loop, white on white, speed made paint. Morisot stood in the first Impressionist show of 1874 — the only woman among the founders — yet posterity long cast her as Manet's pupil, then Manet's sister-in-law. The canvas reached New York through Adelaide Milton de Groot's bequest: one erased woman preserving another.

Part of the 'Erased Masterpieces' curatorial series celebrating women artists restored to art history.
