Public domainMorning Awakening
Morning as manifesto: at thirty, Eva Gonzalès paints intimacy large-scale. A young woman stretches as she wakes — the model is Jeanne, her sister — caught in the fluid light of a bourgeois bedroom. Painted in 1877–1878, this large canvas (81.1 × 100.1 cm, Kunsthalle Bremen) is the poster image of the Petit Palais retrospective, the first large-scale tribute to Manet's only pupil.
This work was shown in the Petit Palais retrospective 'Eva Gonzalès. Parcours d'une artiste libre' (15 September 2026 – 24 January 2027).
