Girl with Cherries

Painting's forbidden fruit: a youth looking straight at you. A young woman holds cherries and meets the viewer's gaze (c. 1870, 56.2 × 47.4 cm, Art Institute of Chicago). Gonzalès is starting out under Manet's wing, already asserting a frank, unflinching portraiture.

This work was shown in the Petit Palais retrospective 'Eva Gonzalès. Parcours d'une artiste libre' (15 September 2026 – 24 January 2027).
