Building the Fleet

Embroidered Latin titulus: « HIC WILLELM DUX IUSSIT NAVES AEDIFICARE »

Upon learning of Harold's coronation, Duke William orders the assembly of an unprecedented invasion fleet. Master shipwrights fell Norman oaks and shape clinker-built longships along the coast.

This fragment belongs to a continuous narrative: the upper and lower registers extend the main story with a bestiary, decorative motifs and symbolic echoes.
