Public domainFuneral of King Edward at Westminster
Embroidered Latin titulus: « HIC PORTATUR CORPUS EADWARDI REGIS AD ECCLESIAM PETRI APOSTOLI »
The body of King Edward the Confessor is carried in solemn procession to St Peter's Abbey, Westminster, which he had only recently consecrated. Beneath the embroidered Latin titulus, tonsured clerics and pallbearers escort the draped bier, preceded by bell-ringing choirboys. The king's death without a direct heir precipitates the immediate succession crisis leading to the Norman Conquest.
This fragment belongs to a continuous narrative: the upper and lower registers extend the main story with a bestiary, decorative motifs and symbolic echoes.
